Friday: A Day To Myself

So, I am blessed to have Friday’s as a day off here at Cross Point.  A day where I get to chose to do whatever I want, whenever I want.  Shay and the kids are at school all day, so it literally is a day to myself.

So, what do I do you ask? I knew you were asked that, so here is my Friday routine.

  • Get up and help Shay get the kids up, fed, dressed and off to school.
  • Start a load of laundry.
  • Vacuum the entire house.
  • Clean the bathrooms. (switch laundry)
  • Sweep & mop kitchen & bathroom floors.
  • More Laundry.
I’ll usually do some random dusting and picking up along the way. As well, as having my coffee, checking in on FB & Twitter.
Why?  That was your next question right?  Why do I spend the one day I have to myself cleaning the house? Good question.  Because I am by no means a clean-freak and to be honest, a little clutter and grime doesn’t really bother me.
No, I spend my Friday’s cleaning the house because I also get Saturday’s off and so does Shay and the kids. And if the house is clean before Saturday, then Shay doesn’t have to worry about it and we can spend Saturday’s as a family doing things that are much more fun than cleaning the house.  If Saturday is truly going to be about Sabbath and family, then I am more than willing sacrifice my “alone day” and do some  cleaning.
What are you sacrificing to make sure you get a Sabbath?  What sacrifices are you willing to make to ensure that you can spend some quality family time?

Free Online Conference on Church Finances

My friends at Givingrocket.com, are hosting a FREE online conference about church finances.  Come on admit it, which one of us doesn’t need this event??

Need some more info to process before you decide?  Check this out…

  • Is break-even ministry getting old?
  • Are you sick of saying no to the God-given dream because of a lack of finances?
  • Are you tired of cutting the outreach budget because it’s too expensive?
  • Are you stressed because you can’t hire the next staff position you desperately need?
  • Are you frustrated that you can start that facility project because there’s no margin in the budget?

Broke or break-even ministry is built on a belief system that has spread like the plague among church leaders. You keep telling yourself that when the economy picks up, when you get ahead, or when that big gift comes in, you’ll launch that ministry.

So the food pantry stays in the ideas folder on your computer.

The outreach campaign remains a picture on your phone.

The idea stays on the whiteboard.

You are losing out on launching your dream.

But the good news is that you can take intentional, practical steps to eliminate the funding barriers.

What would happen in your church if you DID hire the right person to fill that ministry position?  How would your community respond if you really DID open that food pantry or renovate the children’s area.  What would happen if you quit breaking even and broke through to the next level.

At this online event, you will learn principles that we’ve seen work in hundreds of churches.   You will walk away with a framework to move people’s giving from one level to the next.  You will learn easy-to-implement ideas and strategies that call people to action.

This is NOT about getting more money.  It’s about doing more ministry.

This is NOT about launching a high-pressure capital campaign.  It’s about increasing operational revenue.

This is NOT about breaking even or balancing the budget.  It’s about breaking through.

You might be thinking:

  • “You just don’t know my people.”  The bottom line is that while your church has a unique mission and culture, people are generally the same.  People ARE different, but we all share some of the same hopes, dreams and fears.
  • “We’re not in a wealthy area.”  Pastors in urban churches say that people in the city don’t have any money.  Pastors in rural areas talk about how hard it is to get people to give.  Suburban pastors complain about how overextended their people are.
  • “Our church is different.” While it may be true that your church has a focused mission, God has called you to love him and reach people.  That bottom-line mission is for churches of all shapes, sizes and styles.  Stop using your unique calling as an excuse for low funding.

These 180 minutes could change the culture and direction of your church, and free you up to do more ministry.

Missional or Attractional?

I have seen a great deal of debate over the past year or so in the church world about churches being MISSIONAL or ATTRACTIONAL, and to be honest I don’t really get it.

Let me clarify, I get the debate and the positions of each, what I don’t get is the thought that a church can’t be both or better yet, is inherently designed by Christ to be BOTH!

I have been blessed to be on staff at two churches, Harvest Church and Cross Point Church, that exemplify what it means to be a missional church.  Yet, I wouldn’t pigeon-hole them into that category because they both are highly attractional and thriving.

Can I suggest something that seems obvious to me… that churches that are in tune with Christ’s vision of His church being MISSIONAL are because of that reason highly ATTRACTIONAL.

I have many thoughts on this, but I want to know what you think…. So, What Say You?

Although there is internet at the Mission Lazarus ranch, it is quite sketchy. (think 15 years ago dial-up internet). I have a TON of pictures and stories to share with you all, and really want to do them justice, so I plan on a series of posts next week after I return to the states.

Proximity… Does It Matter?

One of the challenging issues (and it should be)  to deal with when becoming a multi-site church or expanding an existing one.  At the core of the issue are Brand Loyalty and Unique Identity and the balance of them.

The closer a campus is located to the OC (original campus), the easier it will be to have Brand Loyalty.  More than likely, many of the folks helping launch that campus are currently attending the OC or another campus, and also there is at minimum Brand Awareness within the surrounding area.  The campus pastor & staff have the benefit of not having to focus their efforts on developing the brand.

However, a campus that is in close proximity to the OC will constantly struggle with developing a Unique Identity.  Ironically, the multi-site church’s effort to promote the “One Church, Multiple Locations” tends to work against some campuses because attendees don’t see a difference between the campuses and may bounce between them frequently.

Conversely, a campus that is further away from the OC tends to develop a Unique Identity quicker yet has the constant struggle of building Brand Loyalty because less people are aware of or have previous knowledge of the OC.

So is there a magic formula or distance calculator to use?

Unfortunately, there isn’t.  It is truly a cultural thing.  When I was in Montana, people were used to traveling great distances and, in some areas, they wouldn’t bat an eye at driving over an hour to attend church. In other areas, if they couldn’t get from their couch to the pew in 15 minutes or less they wouldn’t come.

By rule of thumb, if someone can get to the OC within 15 minutes of another campus, there will always be an issue with that campus being able to develop it’s own Unique Identity.  It is possible and is done by intentionally engraining itself into the local community by outreach projects, local ministries, all to build deep ties into the community.  For a distant campus, they must go over the top to build Brand Loyalty by constantly casting vision, holding leadership meetings and celebrating corporate victories and that of the other campuses.

Ultimately, you are striving for a balance and to be able connect the two.  The ability to build a Unique Identity that maintains the overall Brand will determine the long-term health and success of the campus.

It’s Time for Summer Slam!!!

New Series at Crosspoint.tv

I can’t wait for this series to begin on Sunday and it’s one that you won’t want to miss either!  According to the Crosspoint.tv website:

Do you ever find yourself wrestling with what the Bible says? Thinking things like: “I don’t get this!” “It’s so confusing.” “That isn’t what I’ve always thought.” “But…” Sometimes it seems that encountering scripture can leave us with more questions than answers. We just want to jump off the ropes, put it in a head lock and body slam it into something that we can easily understand and apply! Join us on Sundays this summer for our new series SUMMER SLAM as we tackle some of the challenging ideas that the Bible holds and embrace the tensions they make us feel that lead us to a deeper connection with God.

Can’t make it to one of Cross Point’s campuses, connect with the internet campus on Sunday evening at 6p.m. which is followed by a live Q & A.
